80th Anniversary

On June 28th, 2017, The Junior League of Greater Fort Lauderdale (JLGFL) will be celebrating our 80th year anniversary and we are over the moon about it! We are excited to not only pay tribute to our humble beginnings back in 1937 but also, to come together and plan for our future in our community for the next 80 plus years to come!

JLGFL, for the past 80 years has made tremendous efforts in impacting our community in a positive way through the leadership of well-trained women. Founded by Susan B. Anthony, II, and Charlotte A. Carlisle along with 15 charter members, these dedicated women hit the ground running trying to improve our community as we know it today.

In 1942, Jack and Jill, one of our legacy projects, was founded. Jack and Jill is one of the oldest nonprofit providers of early childhood education in Broward County. Through the various programs they provide, families increase financial stability, maintain employment, achieve job advancement, decrease the risk for incidences of abuse and neglect and foster their child’s healthy growth and development.

The Broward Mental Hygiene Clinic, now known as Henderson Mental Health Clinic, was founded in 1954. They provide healthcare, housing and hope for over 30,000 persons of all ages with behavioral health conditions in Florida each year. Through care, supported employment, advocacy and housing, Henderson assists and inspires people with mental illnesses and substance abuse disorders to reclaim their lives.

In 1974, we began planning for the New River Exploratorium, later to become the Museum of Discovery and Science. A museum dedicated to providing experiential pathways to lifelong learning in science for children and adults through exhibits, programs and films.

By 1978, the Junior League of Greater Fort Lauderdale began planning to initiate another one of our legacy projects, Kids in Distress. From their small beginnings in a shelter, they have expanded into a comprehensive continuum of care that fills the gaps and meets the needs of at-risk children and families in our community. Their foster acre programs, the largest in both Broward and Palm beach counties, successfully recruit safe and loving foster families for children in need.

Planning for our legacy project S.O.S Children’s Village began in 1988. The Village is a foster care neighborhood that assures children in our community are growing up in a safe and secure home. They create a nurturing and vibrant environment with an array of services to help them overcome their past traumas and build a successful future.

We wouldn’t be where we are today without the women who have committed their time to promoting volunteerism, developing the potential of women and improving their community through effective action and leadership. We are not only celebrating the 500 plus active members and sustainers that volunteer their time today, in 2017, but also the women that came before us and have paved the way since 1937.

To celebrate, the 80th Anniversary Committee is working on a couple of events that we hope will commemorate all that the Junior League of Greater Fort Lauderdale has accomplished thus far and all we hope to accomplish in the future.

The Thrift Shop was originally opened in 1940 on the corner of Broward Boulevard and Andrews Avenue (now the site of the Broward Governmental Center.) Our throwback event, that will be paying homage to one of our first project, will be held on April 27th, 2017 from 6:00 pm to 8:30 pm at Lilac and Lilies (2541 E Sunrise Blvd, Fort Lauderdale, FL 33304.) This is a social fundraiser and an opportunity to donate consignment items for the Susan B. Anthony Recovery Center whose mission is to remove barriers for women entering addiction treatment, prevent foster care placement for their children and to end a cycle of addiction and abuse for families. Susan B. Anthony has been helping our community since 1995 and was started by fellow Junior League women!
