State Public Affairs Committee (SPAC) |
The State Public Affairs Committee (SPAC) is the advocacy arm of the Junior Leagues of Florida for nearly 45 years. The SPAC Committee monitors the state legislative process and addresses issues of political importance to our members. The current SPAC priority issues are improved education, at-risk youth, health and hunger, and community safety. Over the years, we have weighed in on various topics, including child safety seats (booster seats), bicycle helmets for children under 16, the Environmental Growth Management Act of 1995, the ‘911’ Emergency Medical System, child abuse, domestic violence, juvenile justice, education, healthy foods, and human trafficking.

Food Insecurity
|
The Food Insecurity Committee works to improve food access in our community. The committee works with legacies and nonprofits to help the community by volunteering at food banks such as Feeding South Florida and hosting food drives for local non-profits such as the Pantry of Broward. The committee also works with the Broward Partnership for the Homeless, LifeNet, and HOPE South Florida to help serve meals to those facing food insecurity across Broward County. In addition, the committee works with the Healthy Mothers Healthy Babies Coalition of Broward County to pack grab and go food bags for low income pregnant and parenting families.

Community Impact
|
The Junior League of Greater Fort Lauderdale selects members to serve on the Board of Directors for legacies and local organizations that align with the league’s mission. JLGFTL members are trained volunteers and knowledgeable in nonprofit operations based on their Junior League experience, including volunteer work and training / development opportunities. This program connects the legacies and local organizations to the Junior League and facilitates the volunteer opportunities. A selection committee nominates the board placements, and the terms are a two-year commitment.
